Der Sohn des ehemaligen 250cc-Weltmeisters Sito Pons, Axel Pons startet zum ersten Mal in der 250er-Kategorie, in der Saison 2009. Pons erhielt 2008 eine Wildcard für Jerez, Estoril und Barcelona, wo er in der 125cc-Klasse fuhr. Beobachtet wurde er dabei vom Vater, der beim Jack&Jones WRB Team ist. Der junge Fahrer fuhr seine Lehrjahre in der Spanischen Meisterschaft (CEV Buckler) und bestritt einige Rennen in der Katalanischen Meisterschaft, wo er beeindruckte und eine Chance für Grand Prix Rennen bekam.

Während seiner Gastauftritte 2008 konnte er jedoch zwei der Rennen nicht beenden und beschloss das Dritte außerhalb der Punkte, aufgrund von Ausritten und technischen Problemen. Nach einem schweren Unfall in der CEV beim Jerez Rennen im Juni musste sich Pons über den Sommer 2008 hinweg erst wieder seine Kräfte antrainieren. Er hatte sich einige Knochenbrüche zugezogen unter anderem beide Beine.

Noch bevor die Saison 2008 beendet wurde kehrte er jedoch auf die Rennstrecke und in die Spanische Meisterschaft zurück. Danach wurde verkündet, dass er in die 250cc-Klasse aufsteigen würde, um für das neue Pepe World Pons WRB Team zu starten in dem auch Hector Barbera fahren wird.
