Gaspare Caffiero hits form on second day of 125 Jerez tests

MotoGP rookie Gaspare Caffiero hit stunning form today in the second day of IRTA tests in Jerez. Aprilia´s latest 125cc recruit beat Roberto Locatelli´s pole position time from last year with an outstanding 1´48.251, ahead of yesterday´s pacesetters Manuel Poggiali of Gilera, who finished the day sixth fastest, and Nobby Ueda on the TSR Honda who was second fastest behind Caffiero. Lucio Cecchinello had an encouraging day´s testing, as did his fellow Aprilia rider Gino Borsoi, whilst Youichi Ui was fifth quickest on the Derbi.

Caffiero seemed somewhat surprised to have set the quickest time. ´Everything went just perfect for us today´ he explained. ´It´s my first time here in Jerez and I like it very much. Our tyres were perfect for the circuit, and I have to say a big thank you to Bridgestone for that. I also have to thank my new team as they have worked very hard. The bike is new to me, as are the tyres, the suspension - everything. Of course I am delighted´.

Not so lucky was fellow rookie Raul Jara, who was one of several riders to fall. The young Spaniard dislocated two vertebrae when he came off his Aprilia and will be out of action for a month and a half. According to doctors he should be fit for the first Grand Prix in Suzuka at the beginning of April, providing he responds to treatment. Czech rider Jakub Smrz fell from his Honda injuring his left hand, and will be out for approximately 3 weeks.

Lucio Cecchinello also fell as the track cooled down towards the end of the session but emerged unhurt. ´I don´t know if it was my fault, or if it was because we changed the front suspension settings, but I lost control of the front end and went down. I´m not hurt though and I´ve set a good time today, which I´m quite surprised about. It´s a new team and I´ve changed from Honda to Aprilia, but I seem to adapting well so far and that is the main thing. We´re very happy.´
