Youichi Ui strikes again in Valencia

Japanese rider Youichi Ui proved in Valencia today that he is currently the most in-form 125 rider after again topping the time charts at the end of the first day of testing. The 125 teams enjoyed perfect weather conditions after their test in Estoril last week was affected by strong winds and slight showers.

´I´m a little surprised because I don’t like this track very much´, said Ui after the session ended. ´I prefer faster tracks, like Phillip Island for instance, but I pushed as much as I could and - well, I´m on top again and that makes me happy´, he added whilst preventing his son Yohei from putting his fingers into the exhaust pipe of his L&M Derbi.

The Derbi-Gilera trio of Ui, Manuel Poggiali and Pablo Nieto where amongst the 4 fastest riders at the Ricardo Tormo circuit with only Italian Lucio Cecchinello putting up a challenge. Despite crashing, Cecchinello managed to finish the day with the third best overall lap time.

Valencia also saw the comeback of experienced Japanese rider Masao Azuma, who didn’t test in Jerez or Estoril because his bike wasn´t ready. ´I´m glad to be here - it was hard for me to see everybody testing when I couldn´t do so. But now I´m here and ready to fight´, the Honda rider joked. Azuma set the fifth best lap immediately after Pablo Nieto. Nieto, incidentally, escaped uninjured from a spectacular crash in a fast 4th gear right-hander. ´I think I flew like 30 meters at least!´, said the young Derbi rider. ´I´m fine, but I suppose my mechanics will have to work till late´. A quick look at his bike after the crash proved as much.

Young Gaspare Caffiero also put in an outstanding performance. Caffiero, who surprised everybody with some excellent times in Jerez, set the seventh best lap in Valencia. All riders took advantage of the excellent weather conditions and the sunshine to lap until the very end of the session.
