Rossi puts in late blast in the second 500cc free practice session

Nastro Azzurro rider Valentino Rossi used the very last lap of the second free practice session to set a fastest ever 500 lap of Suzuka with a 2´05.715; over half a second quicker than nearest rival Noriyuki Haga and under Max Biaggi´s provisional pole time from yesterday. Haga had been the star of the session, continually setting the fastest lap even after falling from his Red Bull Yamaha. The Japanese daredevil had the home crowd gasping when he dived inside Max Biaggi after the Marlboro Yamaha man had cheekily tried to hold him up on a fast lap.

Rossi was not to be outshone though and blasted his way to the quickest time with the checkered flag already waving. The Italian looked delighted with his performance, which promises an interesting qualifying session this afternoon.

Repsol Honda man Tohru Ukawa was third quickest, whilst Biaggi was fourth fastest ahead of World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr. on the Telefonica Movistar Suzuki. Roberts´ team-mate Sete Gibernau fell somewhat spectacularly but was unharmed and put in some extra laps on his spare bikes before the end of the session.
