Ui proves his class with his second 125 pole position of the year in Welkom

Youchi Ui took a while to find his rhythm but his class shone though once again as he took pole position for the 125 Gauloises Africa´s Grand Prix in the final qualifying session this afternoon. There are no surprises on the front row as Nobby Ueda, Manuel Poggiali and Lucio Cecchinello all qualified with some competent riding. The foursome enjoyed an entertaining battle at the front of the pack in the first race at Suzuka, although missing from that particular club was Masao Azuma. Azuma now has his work cut out after qualifying in a disappointing ninth.

There were some major surprises slightly further down the grid however, not least the performance of Angel Nieto Jr. who stormed to fifth spot with an excellent late lap. Nieto Jr.´s Spanish compatriot Toni Elias also put in an outstanding time at the end of the session to make the second row of the grid in 6thspot and delight his team manager Alberto Puig. Puig had further reason to smile as another of his young proteges Dani Pedrosa also shone. At one point the 15 year old looked like snatching a front row spot but he was unable to maintain an incredible start to a fast lap and will line up in a very creditable 15th.

Jakub Smrz suffered his second crash in as many days but was unhurt, whilst wildcard rider Jason Wessels retired and does not qualify for the race.
