Youichi Ui takes comfortable 125 victory

Youichi Ui led from the start to the finish in an exciting 125 race, which produced some daring racing on a track known to be difficult for overtaking. This was the case for the first few laps as Spanish youngster Toni Elias got a fantastic start from 6th on the grid to follow Ui into the first corner. The pair broke away at the front of the pack as battle ensued behind them for early supremacy. Angel Nieto Jr, Nobby Ueda, Gaspare Caffiero and Masao Azuma battled it out, and soon began to hunt down the Honda of Elias.

Manuel Poggiali was the first rider to make the pass and never looked back from second spot, as Nieto Jr. and Ueda also went through. Elias was clinging on desperately to his position and his determination came at a cost to Caffiero. The Aprilia rider passed on the outside but Elias hit back straight away on the inside and the riders touched, sending the Italian sliding into the gravel. Other riders to fall included Raul Jara, who was lucky to escape an unwanted meeting with a concrete wall, Marco Petrini and Jakub Smrz; Jara managed to restart.

Ueda took Borsoi for third on the final lap and clinched a place on the podium. It was Ui´s day though and the Derbi rider shared his celebratory champagne with Ueda and a delighted Poggiali who took a convincing second place.
