Sabbatani takes provisional pole despite crash carnage in 125 first qualifying practice

Max Sabbatani took provisional pole for the 125 race of the Gran Premio Marlboro de España despite suffering a spectacular fall after crashing into Toni Elías. The diminutive Italian set his fastest lap just before bashing into the young Spaniard when trying to pass on the inside and dropped to the track before following his Aprilia into the gravel as the Honda rider headed for the tyre wall.

There was crash carnage throughout the session with Nobby Ueda the first rider to hit the dust just 8 minutes in. The experienced Japanese rider highsided his TSR Honda whilst on a fast lap and although he suffered no serious injury he was unable to return to the track before the end of the session and lies 30th on the provisional grid.

Lucio Cecchinello was the other high profile rider to take a tumble, although he wasn´t quite as unlucky as Ueda in that his fastest lap was enough to see him onto the provisional front row. Cecchinello takes up fourth spot behind Youichi Ui and Steve Jenkner respectively, with the latter taking advantage of the Italian´s unfortunate situation to post a fast lap late in the session.

The provisional second row is made up of Stefano Perugini in fifth, with the Nieto brothers Angel Jr. and Pablo in 6th and 7th respectively, whilst Manuel Poggiali occupies 8th slot.

Eric Bataille completed the disaster figures by sliding into the gravel in the dying stages of the session to bring the total of fallers to five.
