Rossi on form, Giansanti out, Lucchi to race

The warm-up for the 500cc class took place this morning under cloudy but warm positions at the Italian circuit of Mugello. Valentino Rossi was once again in impressive form, setting three laps under the 1´53 mark, which no other rider was able to achieve. The Italian is in impressive form and looks to be the favourite for this afternoon´s race, in front of the thousands of fanatical supporters who have turned up.

The main news from the 250 warm-up is that Marcellino Lucchi will race, despite breaking three bones in his foot just yesterday. The veteran can hardly stand on his injured left foot, but hopped onto his Aprilia machine to set the second quickest lap of the session. The top four fastest times corresponded exactly to the first four riders on the grid, with Tetsuya Harada proving that he is the man to beat this weekend in the quarter-litre class, as opposed to his Japanese compatriot Daijiro Katoh.

Qualification for the 125 grid was confirmed after this morning´s warm-up session, with the only absentee being Mirko Giansanti. The Italian broke a finger yesterday and has a suspected contusion of the ankle. Lucio Cecchinello set the quickest lap time, and lines up on the front row between Toni Elias in second and Andrea Ballerini in third, whilst Youichi Ui is all set to start his fifth consecutive race from pole position.
