Elias looks to make early impression

Honda rider Toni Elias was the main protagonist in this morning´s first free practice in the 125cc class, setting a number of quick laps and looking sharp around this, his home track. Elias, who has really shown the way for the younger riders this season with some excellent performances for his Telefónica Movistar Honda Junior Team, had to battle out for early supremacy with Cecchinello, Poggiali, Ueda and team mate, Daniel Pedrosa.

It was a battle of the Japanese riders early on, as Masao Azuma and Nobby Ueda, fresh from his win in the rain soaked Mugello race, traded places at the top of the time charts. But then Elias began his charge, and he began to set lap after lap of quick times, showing his local fans that he means business this weekend. Towards the latter stages of the practice, Lucio Cecchinello and Manuel Poggiali pushed themselves to get close, but still remain over 0.7 seconds away from Elias. The charts show Elias as fastest, with Cecchinello, Poggiali and Ueda in that order behind him.

Of note in the practice, were the falls of more experienced riders Stefano Perugini and Youichi Ui, the latter making only the 24th fastest lap, and Perugini needing medical attention. It was also good to see Mirko Giansanti back from injury, and looking as though he could improve from his current 9th quickest time.
