Katoh will go into Qualifying in a confident mood

Current World Championship leader Daijiro Katoh proved this morning that Mugello was the furthest thing away from his thoughts as he impressively set the best time in this morning´s second free practice session. Katoh set a fast lap just over 10 minutes into the session, and was not challenged throughout despite Harada, Rolfo, Locatelli, Melandri and McWilliams all trading the best times behind him.

On his 14th lap of the 24 he made this morning, Katoh set a time of 1:48.150, well behind his provisional pole time yesterday. He was followed by Harada (+0.128), Locatelli (+0.409) and home rider Emilio Alzamora (0.457) These were all times which were set towards the very end of the hour long session, pushing Melandri down to ninth time overall, something he will aim to rectify this afternoon in the Qualifying Practice.

Provisional second placed rider on the grid, Alfonso Nieto, had a disappointing session but he will take heart from the fact that this was a free practice, and he will have another hour to prove himself. It seems as if Katoh will go into that second qualifying session brimming with confidence, ready to take his fifth pole of the season.
