Jurgen van den Goorbergh - 14th Position, 2:03.134

Proton Team KR rider Jurgen van den Goorbergh hopes of a good grid position for tomorrow´s Dutch TT were dashed by a rogue technical hitch in today´s final qualifying session, spoiling his speed on the lightweight three-cylinder Proton, and foiling his plans to use his superior corner speed to pick up a valuable slip-stream in the final session. After earlier tests at his home circuit, Jurgen had expected to show well here, especially after two consecutive second row starts and two top-ten finishes at the previous rounds. Today´s hard-to-trace problem, which affected the ignition, meant the grid position was impossible. But with the problem traced and solved directly after the session was over, his hopes for a good race result are still very much alive.

JURGEN VAN DEN GOORBERGH

´No speed. That was my problem this afternoon. I also had a bit of front tyre chatter that meant I had to stop and make some changes .... at exactly the wrong time of the afternoon. At the start of the session it all felt good. Then I felt something was wrong - the engine was losing its edge. We tried various things with the jetting, but it didn´t help. At the end, I was trying to pick up a slipstream, but I couldn´t stay close enough. Then, when I did get a tow off Barros, he stopped. I´m disappointed. I should have stayed on the third row at least. But with the engine running right, and if the new clutch works well and I can get off the line with the pack, I am still confident for tomorrow.´

CHUCK AKSLAND- Team Manager

´It just wasn´t our day. We could see after the first few runs that Jurgen was losing power, but tracking it down took some time. At least we did find the problem, and we can restore the power. Jurgen was a lot more confident this morning, and so far he has been happy with the new clutch. It´s up to the start again - if he can get away quickly, he can have a good race.

Just one thing to add - today is Buster Roberts´s 81st birthday. Buster is the father of our team owner Kenny, and grandfather of World Champions Kenny Junior. Happy Birthday to him from the whole team.´
