West Honda Pons Team : CAPIROSSI THIRD IN ASSEN RAIN

West Honda Pons Team : CAPIROSSI THIRD IN ASSEN RAIN

Italian Loris Capirossi finished third at the Dutch TT at Assen in the MotoGP 500 race which was halted with five laps remaining because of rain. In a fantastic all Italians confrontation in front of 92,000 fans, theWest Honda Pons rider was chasing the Yamaha of Max Biaggi and Honda of Championship leader Valentino Rossi when the red flag appeared as the rain began to fall.

Capirossi´s team-mate Alexandre Barros was fourth despite having to usehis second machine after crashing the wet morning warm-up session. Both Barros and Capirossi took their turns in the lead before Biaggi and Rossi surged by to ensure what promised to be a close finish. Biaggi and Rossi swapped the lead with Capirossi in close attendance but it was Biaggi who was declared the winner after because he was leading after 15 laps. If it had not rained what would have been the outcome - We will neverknow.

LORIS CAPIROSSI third. ´ I had to ride so hard in the early laps that I worked my tyres very hard. I was disappointed when the red flag was shown because I felt there were a couple of places that I could pass both Rossi and Biaggi in those last four laps. However, it was the right decision to stop the race because the rain started pouring. I´m pleased to be on the podium but disappointed it´s not in first place.´

ALEX BARROS fourth,´ I crashed in the morning warm-up and had to use my second machine in the race.We then had an engine problem and had to start the final sighting lap from pit lane. The bike was working well but therear tyre was not good. The front forks did not have the same feeling as my number one machine .These are small things that turn into big problemswhen you are racing against the three Italians.´
