Biaggi in clouds as Rossi hits earth with a bang

Max Biaggi took his Yamaha to provisional pole for the Cinzano British Grand Prix in stylish fashion this afternoon, whilst a crash for title rival and fellow Italian Valentino Rossi saw the Honda rider qualify back in eleventh place. Rossi´s spectacular slide into the grass saw his NSR 500 bounce down the track, leaving debris across the asphalt which caused a seven minute delay to the session.

When the red flags were withdrawn Biaggi seemed to step up a gear as he headed to the top of the time sheets to hold off the challenge of West Honda Pons team-mates Loris Capirossi and Alex Barros. The other star performer of the session was Jurgen vd Goorbergh, who put the Proton KR machine on the provisional front row for the first time this season with a gritty display.

Suzuki team-mates Kenny Roberts and Sete Gibernau head the second row, whilst another rider to impress was Frenchman Olivier Jacque, who put in his best performance of an injury-hit season to qualify seventh. Carlos Checa makes up the second row whilst fellow Yamaha riders Shinya Nakano and Jose Luis Cardoso complete a top ten which features just two Honda riders.

Two other riders joined Rossi on the deck in this afternoon´s session. Loris Capirossi lost control early in the session before recovering to set his best lap on his spare bike, whilst Leon Haslam also slipped on the greasy surface but emerged uninjured and was also able to complete further laps before the end of the session.
