Biaggi blasts new pole record at Brno

Biaggi blasts new pole record at Brno

Max Biaggi was in sensational form at today´s first qualifying session for the Gauloises Czech Grand Prix, sending shockwaves through the 500 field with a new lap record of 2´00.347, almost a full second quicker than his previous record at the Brno circuit. The Yamaha rider contested top spot throughout the session with Italian compatriot Loris Capirossi, but the Honda man was helpless as he watched Biaggi beat his best effort by 0.740 seconds. World Champion Kenny Roberts pushed his way onto the front row in third place, whilst a late surge from the previous holder of the coveted 500cc crown, Alex Criville, took him to fourth.

Garry McCoy marked his return to full fitness with fifth place on the provisional grid and a crash. The Australian was clearly back to his old self, with a display of on the edge riding which inevitably ended in the gravel track with just seconds remaining of the session. He emerged unscathed however and will be fit for tomorrow´s action, although Yamaha colleague Shinya Nakano is doubtful after falling in this morning´s free practice session and breaking a bone in his right hand.

Joining McCoy on the second row is Alex Barros in sixth, Championship leader Valentino Rossi in seventh and Carlos Checa in eighth.
