West Honda Pons: CAPIROSSI THIRD IN BRNO BATTLE

West Honda Pons: CAPIROSSI THIRD IN BRNO BATTLE

Italian Loris Capirossi finished a brilliant third in the 22 lap MotoGP500 race at the Czech Republic Grand Prix in Brno this afternoon (Sunday). The West Honda Pons rider was involved in a tremendous last lap battle with former World Champion Alex Criville and Japanese Yamaha rider Norick Abe for second place. He out-braked them both with just over half a lap remaining but then selected the wrong gear and had to settle for third place behind Criville, in the race comfortably won by Championship leader Valentino Rossi. His team-mate Alex Barros had a difficult weekend suffering from steering and turning problems and finally finished ninth after a tough ride.

LORIS CAPIROSSI, third: ´That was a very hard race and a great result for me and the team, which makes us confident for the remaining six races. I made a good start from the front row but was hit by Jurgen vd Goorbergh on the first lap which knocked me back to fifth and out of touch with the leaders. When Biaggi crashed I realised I could finish on the podium and really rode hard after Criville and Abe. On the last lap I out braked them both but changed down into first instead of second and Alex got by. It was a good ride by him and I was pleased for Alex after our collision in Germany.´

ALEX BARROS, ninth: ´The whole weekend has been very disappointing because we have not been able to get the bike to turn and steer. I made a badstart and had to push very hard in the opening few laps. The way I was riding I used up far too much from the tyres and at the finish even the rear tyre was finished. I did all I could do.´
