Jorge Martínez Aspar finalising details for 2002

Coinciding with the Grand Prix at their ´home´ circuit, the Aspar team are taking the opportunity to finalise details for next season. Negotiations are underway with Aprilia and could be completed soon, with plans in place to run two riders in 250 and two in 125, all with oficial machines and factory support from the Italian firm.

Team Owner Jorge Martínez ´Aspar´ arrived at their hospitality suite for a chat with Motograndprix.com on a huge Aprilia. He´s a busy man. Not only is he deep in talks about the 2002 season, he has his current crop of young riders competing at home in front of an expectant Spanish crowd who will pack the grandstands of the Ricardo Tormo circuit on Sunday.

´It´s an extra honour for the riders to be racing here in Valencia but for me it´s just a crazy weekend because we have friends, sponsors, everybody here,´ says the four times former World Champion. ´I´m sure the crowd are going to be great this year, I just hope that the weather holds off for them and that the Spanish rides give them plenty to shout about.´

Martínez quickly moves onto business, and addresses the rumours which suggest a posible move for Italian youngster Marco Melandri. ´I´d love to be able to confirm that right now, but the signing of Melandri depends on Aprilia, who are currently looking for the best option for him.´ The rider who would partner Melandri in the quarter-litre team should the move come off would be Fonsi Nieto, who has yet to sign but is seen as an almost certainty.

´I think Fonsi will stay with us, he was offered a place a few months ago, but he has had a great season and he has other offers to consider too. We want him to stay. We will be able to offer him top class material, a 100% official machine and all tjhe technical support a factory like Aprilia has to offer. Next year, without Katoh and Harada in the category, Fonsi will have a great chance. He is only 22 years old and with the experience he has now it could be his year.´
