Eleventh heaven for record breaker Katoh

Eleventh heaven for record breaker Katoh

Daijiro Katoh took a hard fought eleventh victory of the season in Rio today, setting new records for the most wins in a season and the highest points total ever in the 250 class. It was without doubt the closest event of the season in the category with the track starting off damp but drying throughout to set up an exciting race which saw six riders in the front group battling for podium spots.

In the end the Italian pair of Marco Melandri and Roberto Locatelli broke clear with Katoh and fought for victory on the final two laps. Katoh made his break with a fastest lap of the race on the penultimate lap, a time then bettered by Melandri on the final lap as he beat Locatelli to second.

Fonsi Nieto and Jeremy McWilliams lead the battle for fourth place and set an electrifying pace over the final few laps which Tetsuya Harada was unable to maintain. The Spaniard overcame his British rival in an intense finale to take fourth with Harada coming in to make it five out of the top six for Aprilia.
