New Ducati 998 given Testastretta treatment

Success on the track for the 998 has opened up new market possibilities for Ducati and the Italian firm have reacted by upgrading the machine with a new Testastretta engine. The design of the 998cc Testastretta (NarrowHead) represents the state-of-the-art of high performance, transversally mounted twin-cylinder engines.

The new Testastretta engine is the most notable improvement on a motorcycle which owes much to its predecesor, the Ducati 996. A ´softer´ version (123 HP) of the Testastretta is equipped on the 998, a version derived from the 996R (136 HP) is equipped on 998S and an improved version (999cc, 139 HP) is equipped on the 998R. The project took over a year of research and the result is a completely revised and improved engine: power delivery has been increased throughout the rev range and reaches, on the 998R, 139 HP at 10000 RPM, with a maximum torque of 101 Nm at 8000.

A new high-volume airbox is matched to an advanced fuel-injection derived straight from the Corse racers and features ´shower type´ injectors positioned directly above the throttle butterflies.These are not the only new features on the Testastretta. Fully-adjustable Showa front forks, matched to an Ohlins rear shock, keep the power on the road, and you confidently in control.

An adjustable steering damper ensures stable and predictable control and light weight Brembo four-piston calipers grab new lighter front discs ensuring positive and progressive stopping power. Marchesini wheels and a more aerodynamic fairing complete the new Ducati 998.
