Honda Announces Motorcycle R&D Centre in China

Honda R&D Co., Ltd. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.) has announced that it intends to establish a new overseas subsidiary in China next month. Construction work on the new facility in Shanghai will begin as soon as the company, which is scheduled to start research and development operations in April 2003, has been established.

The Chinese motorcycle market is the largest in the world, at over 10 million units per year, and it is expected to continue expanding rapidly. Under these circumstances, Honda is concentrating efforts on expanding its motorcycle business through three joint ventures in China; Sundiro Honda Motorcycle Co., Ltd., Jialing-Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and Wuyang-Honda Motor (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd.

Honda hope that the new motorcycle R&D operation will further strengthen their development capability to cope with the diversified needs of the Chinese market.´I have recently had more opportunities to experience first-hand the current atmosphere in Asia,´ said Honda Motor Co. President Hiroyuki Yoshino. ´I visited China twice late last year, and in every country and city I have visited, there was a feeling of vitality in the air, just like in Japan during the heady days of its high-growth period.´

´We believe that one of our topmost priorities in our activities in Asia is to further enhance Honda’s presence in China, the largest market in the world. We are currently expanding our motorcycle business through three joint ventures in China. In addition, the new motorcycle R&D centre in Shanghai will further strengthen our development capability to cope with the various demands arising in the vast Chinese market. By establishing local operations from research and development through production, we aim to offer products that can satisfy and please our customers.´
