MZ officially presents riders Ralf Waldmann and Jose Luis Cardoso

German manufacturer MZ officially presented their MotoGP squad on Friday, with the surprise inclusion of Ralf Waldmann, runner-up in the 250 World Championship in 1996 and 1997. The veteran will accompany Jose Luis Cardoso in the factory´s 4 stroke development project.

Both riders outlined their confidence and enthusiasm for the project, which will soon enter the testing phase before taking part in official competition. MZ Engineering and Sporting Director Jurgen Zurn confirmed the team´s current plan, which should see the machine lapping by May and ready for its first Grand Prix at the Dutch TT in June. He added that the machine could debut sooner than expected if positive results are achieved from the initial tests.

Whilst the capture of Cardoso had already been revealed, that of Waldman comes as a major surprise, with the German having announced his decision to retire from the sport at the end of the 2000 season. After coming so close to major success in the quarter-litre class, ´Waldy´ stepped up to 500cc in 1998 with Modenas before returning to 250 for two seasons with Aprilia.

He began his relationship with MZ last season when he assisted at the presentation of a new sports bike at Sachsenring, during the German Grand Prix. He has also been involved in the Dark Dog Challenge to MotoGP, a competition designed to discover and promote young racing talent in Germany.
