Checa delighted with the new M1 chassis

I'm in Mugello for four days with my team at the moment, covering plenty of laps at the Italian circuit before heading to the IRTA tests at the Circuito de Catalunya next week. The first thing I must say is that my feelings about the project have changed in a matter of hours. When we began testing things were not going so well but at the end of Thursday we tried a new chassis and suddenly it changed everything.

Twenty laps of Mugello with the new frame were probably more useful to us than most of the preseason so far. Its performance is a world apart from the chassis we were using in Valencia and Estoril and that showed in the results, with my best time improved by a second after just a few laps. I was closing in on the lap record and felt much more comfortable than I have done in recent weeks.

Things have taken an important and positive turn and from now on we know which direction we must work in with regard to the chassis. We have now identified the base and Yamaha have given me what I wanted. Now it's a case of refining the frame and finding the optimum combination for suspension and tyres in order to get the most out of the bike. The problems I was encountering through the corners are now almost completely resolved so I can open the gas earlier and control the bike a lot better. Obviously I am aware that we are not looking at a final solution just yet, but we have made a huge step.

With regard to the engine I have to say that the one we are using is not exactly how I would have wanted it. From this point of view all I can say is that Yamaha have known what I want for some time and I imagine they are working hard to provide it. The only thing I can do is give maximum effort to complete a very positive week's work. The weather forecasts are predicting rain so I hope they don't come true!
