Katoh fever rising in Japan after Sports Merit Award

Daijiro Katoh`s popularity continues to rise in his homeland of Japan after his decoration with the national Sports Merit Award. The 250cc World Champion received his award at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Kasumigaseki, Tokyo, from the minister Atsuko Toyama. `It seems a superhuman effort to win 11 races out of 16´, Ms Toyama said to Katoh, referring to his record breaking season in 2001. `I sincerely hope you will continue your success in contributing to the promotion of motorcycle sports activities in the future.´

Katoh, who makes his debut in the MotoGP category at Suzuka this weekend, added: `I heard the news of the award when I was testing in Spain. Today I realised again what an honour it is and I am deeply grateful. I will continue to do my best and I hope that more and more people will become interested in our sport. My target for this year is to win a race in the MotoGP class.
