Fonsi Nieto claims Suzuka pole right at the last

Fonsi Nieto has begun the new season by claiming pole position for the SKYY Vodka Grand Rrix of Japan. The Spanish rider snatched first place right at the last, and in doing so claimed the third pole of his career.

For the first half hour of the 45 minute session there were no changes in the top three places from yesterday´s qualifying, with Franco Battaini preserving his advantage. However with just two and a half minutes remaining, Randy de Puniet grabbed top spot with Campetella team-mate racing into second. The Frenchman´s happiness was cut short though when with his final lap of the session, Fonsi Nieto went just over a tenth of second inside his mark.

Tomorrow´s front row will be made up of Fonsi, De Puniet, Melandri and Battaini, while the second will feature Debon, Alzamora, Porto and Miyazaki.
