Rossi takes first win in inaugural MotoGP World Championship

Valentino Rossi opened the new MotoGP era by taking victory at the SKYY VODKA Grand Prix of Japan aboard his Honda RC211V 4-stroke in what was a hard fought and exciting race. The Italian World Champion eventually overtook race leader Akira Ryo with five laps remaining to secure his win. Carlos Checa took the third podium spot ahead of Itoh who had led the Spaniard for the best part of the race.

There were several fallers in the race which took place in wet conditions. Hopkins and McCoy both fell on the third lap, and Biaggi and Roberts both departed on lap seven. Gibernau slid out off contention on the thirteenth when placed fourth, and McWilliams, Nakano and Ukawa all suffered similar fates. Meanwhile Capirossi and Katoh were both down the field due to differing technical problems.

The new generation 4-stroke bikes occupied the top four spots in a race in which had only twelve finishers, five of them being lapped.
