Melandri tells motograndprix.com about his start to the season
After a tough start to the season in Japan, Aprilia MS Racing rider Marco Melandri tells motograndprix.com of his feelings regarding the race and looks ahead to the next round in South Africa.
´I was prepared for a dry race at Suzuka but unfortunately on the day of the race the rain came and made the track very slippery. Over the first few laps I felt the benefit of some hard work with the suspension set-up and was comfortable, even though I have never been good in the wet. However, this was the first time I had ridden at Suzuka in these conditions and I fell before I had even got used to the circuit.
I had already had problems with the corner on previous laps. It is a slow but dangerous curve which you take in first or second gear. I was in first but on the seventh lap, when I fell, I braked a little too hard and the bike went, first the rear and then the front and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I was pretty angry because I missed out on a good opportunity to score points. I wanted to win this race but luckily none of my main rivals had good results either. I realised that I can actually ride fast in wet so that was another positive factor.
Now I have to make up for all that at the next race in South Africa. It is a track which can be slippy but is also fun. I can do well there… especially if the race is in dry!
