Cecchinello talks about a tough start to the season for his Safilo Oxido team

The race weekend at Suzuka was a very difficult time for the whole Safilo Oxido team. We went out there with high hopes as it was the start of a new season, but throughout the weekend we suffered with some electrical problems on the bike. This meant it was hard to get the best out of the bike in the qualifying sessions, I ended up third on the grid, but Alex de Angelis was further down, which was a shame as he has been going well in pre-season. In the race itself everything became a lot more difficult because of the wet conditions. Unfortunately towards the end of the race when I was really pushing to try and get into the podium positions, I ended up sliding out, and although I managed to get back on and finish, I came in ninth which was a bit frustrating.

However, I think that finishing the race and picking up some points was the most important thing, and they could be vital points at the end of the season. Alex was a bit unlucky, he crashed out on only the second lap, but it was the first time that he had ridden the Aprilia in the rain and so it was hard for him to adjust, but I'm sure it will be good experience for him as a rider.

We head off to South Africa for the next Grand Prix tomorrow. All the team will be meeting up in Paris in the morning, then we fly to S.Africa, and arrive on the Wednesday. I enjoy the race at Welkom and it´s a good circuit, but I only hope it´s in good condition. Sometimes out there the track can be a bit dirty, with a lot of sand on it which does not help the riders, but it usually produces a good race.

People are still asking me whether I´m enjoying my dual role as manager and rider, and my answer is… absolutely! Some might think there is just too much to do, but I continue to believe in my ability, and know I´m capable of achieving something great with this team. I have a great group of people around me who help out with all the hard work, and with their support I know the job is very hard, but not impossible.

Look forward to talking to you all again soon, enjoy the race in S. Africa.
