Checa hopes to repeat podium finish at Welkom

Carlos Checa heads for the Africa´s Grand Prix next weekend hoping for a repeat podium appearance after his third place finish in the first race of the new season Suzuka. The Spanish rider believes the result in Japan is a good reference for Welkom: ´Third place was a good start for us but I know that we can do better,´ said Checa. `The best thing for me in Suzuka was qualifying because I was very close to pole position. This shows that our bike is at a very high level and ready to win races´.

The Marlboro Yamaha man is now looking forward to the second round of the MotoGP World Championship: ´Welkom is a tough circuit for tyre performance. I had a good result there in 2000 and I missed the race last year through injury. The track surface is quite slippery but I like to slide the bike around. It also has one of the best corners on the calendar – the series of fast rights at the end of the straight is incredible´.

Checa is also happy with the development of the Yamaha M1: ´We are working well with the motorcycle but we need to improve the performance of the front end. It pushes less on the front than the 500 but I still have a few problems on the slow corners. We made good progress in Japan and we should be able to go quicker in Welkom now that we have two units of the new chassis´.
