Rossi takes his second pole of the season after an action-packed session

Valentino Rossi took his second consecutive pole in the new MotoGP category with a time some 31 thousandths of a second outside the pole time he recorded at the same track last year. The Italian dominated the second session from the seventh minute when he bettered the time of Capirossi from yesterday. From that moment, the World Champion kept on producing faster laps, and his compatriot kept on trying to beat them. At the end, just 32 thousandths of a second separated them.

Behind the two Italians positions were changing hands thick and fast. Katoh found it difficult to improve on his time from yesterday. The Yamaha M1s got better as the session progressed, with Biaggi finishing in fourth and Checa in seventh. McCoy managed an impressive fifth after his injury troubles, just one spot ahead of American Kenny Roberts Jr. Ukawa rode his Honda on to the front-row, in third position.

The first 19 riders were separated by just a second and a half in what was another demonstration of the closeness of the MotoGP field. Spaniard Pere Riba qualified last on the grid, trailing home Japanese rider Tetsuya Harada.
