Poggiali sets an early marker by claiming provisional pole

125cc World Champion Manuel Poggiali has provisional pole in Jerez after a first qualifying session which he began and ended in dominant style. The San Marinese rider went quickest on his second lap of the session, and then attempted to defend his advantage from the dual attacks of Spaniards, Daniel Pedrosa and Pablo Nieto.

The Honda rider was the first to better Poggiali´s early mark, some twelve minutes from the end, and maintained that lead until Nieto went faster still six minutes later. In the final three minutes of the session, the three riders held their own private battle for first position, and eventually it was ´Poggy´ who came out on top, though there was only one tenth of a second separating the trio.

Gino Borsoi completed the provisional front row, whilst current championship leader, Arnaud Vincent qualified in seventh in what was otherwise a fairly unspectacular session.
