Interesting facts and statistics ahead of Sunday´s race

- The grid is once again very close with just under 3.4 seconds covering all of the starters. The first three races of the year have been the three closest grids of all time in the premier class of Grand Prix racing.
- This is the first all Honda front row since the Grand Prix of Argentina at the end of 1998.
- Valentino Rossi, who starts on pole for the third consecutive race, now has a run of 13 point scoring finishes including six successive podiums.
- Alex Barros starts from his best grid position since he started in second place for the Australian Grand Prix at the end of 2000.
- Daijiro Kato starts from the front row for the first time in the MotoGP class. Katoh won the 250cc race last year at Jerez with an average speed faster than Tohru Ukawa who finished in 5th place in the 500cc race just 6 seconds behind winner Rossi.
- Carlos Checa has been the highest placed Yamaha rider at both of the first two races of 2002. Checa´s qualifying lap is the fastest ever lap around the Jerez circuit by a Yamaha rider in either qualifying or racing.
