Checa snatches provisional pole from Rossi at the very last

Carlos Checa ended the first MotoGP qualifying session in top spot after beating the time of Valentino Rossi with just under a minute remaining. The Spanish rider, who was also quickest in this morning´s free practice, had remained in the top positions throughout the session, and launched his final attack with some 6 minutes remaining. After twice bettering his times from sixth place, he went faster than Rossi to confirm provisional pole.

Championship leader Rossi had moved to the top of the time sheets seven minutes into the session, and then had to fend off attacks from Capirossi, Biaggi and Ukawa who all occupied second place at various times. Eventually though Rossi was to finish second, in front of Nakano, Biaggi and Capirossi, while Sete Gibernau came in ninth.

Once again, the times clocked were very close. Between Checa, and McWilliams in fourteenth there was less than a second of difference. All 21 riders were covered by just 2.7 seconds in total.
