Ceccinello takes his second consecutive victory in Le Mans

Italian rider Lucio Cecchinello took his second successive victory of the season in a race in which he took the lead on the ninth lap, and held it until the chequered flag despite the best efforts of World Champion Manuel Poggiali. The front positions changed hands with breathtaking frequency, with an initially large leading pack eventually reduced to six riders after some falls.

Spaniard Pedrosa took the holeshot, and remained in the lead until Masao Azuma passed him on lap four, although Poggiali was then to pass the Japanese veteran a lap later. On the ninth lap, Cecchinello took over leadership of the race, and was attempting to break away when team-mate Alex de Angelis suffered a spectacular fall whilst second and split the following pack. Vincent and Azuma had been making strong charges and were closing in on first when disrupted by the fall of de Angelis. At the end, Poggiali and Pedrosa joined Cecchinello in the podium places, with Vincent coming in fourth, Azuma fifth, and Pablo Nieto sixth.

Vincent still leads the championship standings by 17 points from Poggiali, and is a further 4 clear of the rampant Cecchinello.
