´Aspar´ assesses the rich vein of form of his quarter-litre set-up

Jorge Martinez ´Aspar´ only made the jump to manager of a 250 team last year, yet already this term he has been provided with factory Aprilia machinery and, up to this moment, has the most in-form rider in the category, and number one candidate for the quarter-litre crown. The ex 80 and 125cc World Champion refused to get carried away with his team´s start, but could not hide his satisfaction. ´We´re still at the beginning of the season, and it´s too early to go making predictions, but things could not be going any better. What Fonsi is doing is very special, but I´m also very satisfied by the work of Toni Elias, and I´m sure that at circuits like Mugello, Catalunya and Assen, Toni will get better and better and his results will improve accordingly. In France he made a huge leap, both in terms of the race, and qualifying.´

Fonsi has made a remarkable start to the season, developing from being a quick rider into one capable of winning races. ´Aspar´ outlined the factors to the progression of his pupil: ´I think the key to the change is on the one hand being part of a team with a winning bike, and who completely believe in him. On the other hand the rider must have faith in himself and believe he can win races whoever he is. I think he has seen this, and has really developed immensely. He is now very sure in himself and I think this is the key.´

Fonsi´s closest rival is Marco Melandri, who, like the Spaniard, rides an official Aprilia in the factory team. However, Aspar is not worried about that fact. ´Some people might believe that because his main rival is Italian, and that the team is also Italian, there could be problems for us, but I have a lot of faith in Aprilia. I have spent seven years with them, and our relationship has been excellent. They have always provided me with excellent material, and I can not complain with the treatment I have received. It´s obvious that from about the sixth or seventh race they will support the best placed rider. At the moment that is Fonsi, and I hope that from Barcelona things will get even better for us´.
