Birthday boy Jenkner takes provisional pole

German rider Steve Jenkner celebrated his twenty-sixth birthday by taking provisional pole in the 125 class, in a session which he dominated the second half of, holding off the attacks of World Champion Manuel Poggiali.

Borsoi had been the first rider to show after the first few laps, but in the eleventh minute he was overtaken by Poggiali and Giansanti who went on to dominate the session before Bianco and Ueda both suffered spectacular falls. Jenkner moved into the lead eleven minutes from the end, but lost top spot on two occasions. Firstly to team-mate Gino Borsoi. Then after having recovered it once, the German was again knocked down to second spot, this time by Arnaud Vincent, but Jenkner upped his pace in the final minutes to reclaim first place despite the late surge of Poggiali. Vincent and Borsoi complete the provisional front row line-up.

Lucio Cecchinello, winner of last last two Grand Prix, qualified seventh behind Ballerini and Giansanti. Daniel Pedrosa ended in fifteenth place.
