Rossi cruises to fourth win of the year in Mugello

Valentino Rossi stormed to his fourth victory of the season in front of his home fans, at the circuit where he fell last year in the rain. The MotoGP race was dominated by Italians, as Rossi held off an early challenge from compatriot Max Biaggi, who led the race from laps seven to thirteen.

Rossi moved into the lead with ten laps remaining and from that moment began to open up a insurmountable gap between himself and Biaggi. At the end there were just under three seconds separating the two, and in clinching victory, Rossi became the first rider to win at Mugello in all three World Championship classes. Behind the two Italians, Ukawa and Checa lost ground as they battled for third. Checa moved ahead of Ukawa five laps from the end, but three laps later Ukawa reclaimed the final podium spot and held on. Barros finished fifth after overcoming his team-mate Loris Capirossi.

The provisional championship standings now see Rossi with 120 points, Ukawa with 77 and Capirossi in third with 55.
