Poggiali makes positive start by taking provisional pole

Manuel Poggiali once again demonstrated the rich vein of form he is in by taking provisional pole in the first qualifying session of the Gran Premi Marlboro de Catalunya. The Gilera rider, who took over at the top of the championship standings in Mugello, led the session from the opening minutes, and maintained top spot despite Pedrosa and Jenkner having brief spells above him.

Pedrosa eventually finished second and Jenkner third. Both riders once again showed why they have been podium contenders throughout the season. The provisional front line was completed by Alex de Angelis who came in fourth ahead of the surprising Dovizioso. Behind the Italian came Vincent, Pablo Nieto and Lucio Cecchinello.

Poggiali tried to improve his time on his final lap, and was on the verge of achieving his aim when he ran into traffic late in the lap and lost the chance to stretch his advantage over his rivals. Young Spanish Derbi rider, Jorge Lorenzo, took a creditable thirteenth place finish.
