Biaggi finally breaks Rossi´s pole stranglehold

Max Biaggi took his first pole of the season, in a final qualifying session that was turned on its head in the final three minutes. Everything began to change from the moment that John Hopkins moved into top spot with only four minutes remaining. The American surprised everyone with his time which shows the rapid progression he has made since joining the class.

Capirossi started the session with provisional pole, but Rossi moved ahead of him with 24 minutes remaining. Biaggi, Checa and Ukawa were also in the thick of the action, and closed in on the reigning World Champion, but it proved to be Hopkins who surpassed him. From then on, various riders launched late surges, but it was Biaggi who clinched pole by three tenths of a second from Ukawa, and he was a further tenth ahead of Gibernau and Rossi.

Loris Capirossi qualified fifth after taking a long time to improve his best of yesterday, while Carlos Checa eventually finished seventh after falling on his final lap whilst pushing hard to claim a place on the front row.
