Melandri clinches pole as conditions again play their part

Just as it had in the other classes, the weather intervened in the final 250cc qualifying session, and prevented anybody from bettering the provisional times set yesterday. As the riders made their way out on to the track at the start of the session, another of the heavy showers that have battered the Assen circuit all day arrived.

From that moment all thoughts of challenging the times set yesterday disappeared, and it was only half an hour before the end of the session that the riders began to reappear to work on set-ups for a hypothetical wet race. Although conditions did improve slightly, another shower hit the circuit with around a quarter of an hour remaining to definitively dispel any hopes there may have been of challenging the results of the first qualifying session.

As a result, Melandri took his first pole of the campaign ahead of Frenchman de Puniet, and Spaniards Fonsi Nieto and Toni Elias. The second row will be made up of Sebastian Porto, Franco Battaini and two of the main protagonists of the meeting so far Casey Stoner and veteran Ralf Waldmann.
