Shuhei Aoyama looks back on his first European adventure

Shuhei Aoyama made his first ever Grand Prix appearance outside of Japan last week, when he replaced German rider Klaus Nohles for the Gauloises Dutch TT. It was a tough baptism for the Japanese rider, who was introduced to his new team and machine in Holland, whilst the constantly fluctuating weather conditions made it almost impossible for him to learn the Assen track.

In the first free practice on Thursday, Aoyama was 31st quickest but just one day later in the rain he was third. In the warm-up for the race he once again showed his class in the wet when he lapped sixth fastest, but the track dried out along with his hopes of a points finish and in the race he finished in 25th position.

`More than anything I think I realised that there are so many fast riders in the World Championship,´ he explained afterwards. `It is a huge challenge to contest the Europeans rounds. In the race at Assen I just tried to stay as calm as possible and ride on the limit. Hopefully I can score points in the next round at Donington ´.
