Barros takes pole position while Rossi and Ukawa are out of action
The main surprise of this first MotoGP qualifying session was the absence of Valentino Rossi and Tohru Ukawa, unable to take part in session as they were in the Nottingham´s Queen´s Medical Centre to undergo tests, in order to determine the extend of the potential injuries sustained after crashing during the first free practice session.
Barros has been the main protagonist from the start of the session, despite Roberts late charge ; he took the lead while the Brazilian rider was improving his best lap time. The American only stood in first position until Barros crossed the line, lapping two tenth faster than the former World Champion. Roberts finished at the second position, ahead of Max Biaggi.
Hopkins has demonstrated his progress once again, clinching the fourth spot with a two tenth advantage over Carlos Checa. The Spaniard crashed after completing his second lap, but he managed to come back on the track and eventually qualified ahead of local hero Jeremy McWilliams, sixth aboard the Proton. The Ulsterman was faster than Abe (7th) and Nakano(8th). Alex Hofmann qualified in 18th position for his debut on the West Honda Pons NSR 500.
