Fonsi Nieto defends pole position despite Melandri´s assaults

Fonsi Nieto keeps his pole position, as he was already the fastest man on track during the first qualifying session. In the early stages of the session, there weren´t many changes in the front as Nieto, Melandri and Elias were the leading trio with the times they posted yesterday. Meanwhile, Porto, Rolfo, Aoki, Alzamora and Battaini were fighting for the second row positions.

Melandri was the first of the front runners to charge, but he couldn´t beat Fonsi´s best lap. The Spaniard improved his lap time by a tenth three minutes before the end of the session ; that was enough to guarantee him the pole position despite Melandri´s last attempt. Toni Elias hasn´t been able to improve and has been relegated to fifth by Porto and Alzamora. The Argentinian rider is back on the first row for his 100th GP appearance ; it´s also some kind of a come back for the Spaniard, after a couple of disappointing Grand Prix.

Behind Elias, the second row of the grid is completed by Matsudo, Rolfo and Battaini.
