Manuel Poggiali keeps the pole despite crashing during the last qualifying session

World reigning Champion Manuel Poggiali preserved his first position in the second qualifying session despite being highsided nine minutes before the end of the session.

Poggiali started the session with a three tenths advantage over Pedrosa, and five tenths over Japanese rider Youichi Ui. None of theses three riders have been able to improve their lap time, and eventually qualified first, third and fourth respectively. Lucio Cecchinello has taken the second spot on the starting grid, having recorded the best improvement in this last qualifying session. Ten minutes before the chequered flag was raised, the Italian was fourth ; he managed to gain two places in the late stages of the session, reducing the gap between Poggiali and himself to a tenth of a second.

Borsoi broke in second row, ahead of Olivé, de Angelis and Ballerini. Mika Kallio took ninth, demonstrating once more his progress in his debut season.
