Melandri clinches a hard-fought fourth consecutive win against Nieto

Marco Melandri clinched his fourth consecutive win of this season after a thrilling last lap, in which his rival Fonsi Nieto gave it all. Melandri was leading in the late stages of the race, but was overtook by the Spaniard in the last section of the track. However, the Italian was prompt to strike back and made his winning move in the Melbourne curve.

Toni Elias took third behind Melandri and Fonsi, coming back to the front positions after a mediocre start in the first half of the race. The Spaniard has been fighting against Rolfo and Battaini to record his second rostrum finish in the quarter litre class. French privateer Randy de Puniet classified sixth, ahead of Aoki, Matsudo and Debon.

Sebastian Porto has been leading during the 12 first laps of his 100th Grand Prix, but a mechanical failure wasted his opportunity to finish on the podium. Marco Melandri has now a 13 points lead over Fonsi Nieto, while Rolfo lies in 3rd, 25 points behind the Spaniard.
