Jeremy McWilliams takes last gasp provisional pole

British rider Jeremy McWilliams today stormed to provisional pole with a blistering last lap in the first qualifying session for the Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. McWilliams charged his Proton to a new pole record at the Sachsenring circuit with a lap of 1´26.067, beating the efforts of Olivier Jacque and Valentino Rossi.

Expectations that the 2 stroke riders would set the pace at this tight and twisty track were exceeded by McWilliams and Jacque, who held top spot for much of the session, whilst Kato also lapped in the top positions before qualifying sixth. Fellow Honda NSR500 rider Alex Barros was fourth quickest ahead of Max Biaggi, who heads a provisional second row which also hosts Tohru Ukawa in seventh place and Shinya Nakano in eighth.

Tetsuya Harada was ninth quickest ahead of Carlos Checa, with only 0.6 seconds covering the top ten qualifiers.
