Vincent takes convincing pole

Arnaud Vincent followed up victory at the Cinzano British Grand Prix with pole position at Sachsenring with around half a second to spare over Manuel Poggiali. The current World Champion started the final qualifying session on provisional pole position but was unable to match the blistering pace of the Frenchman late in the session.

Vincent topped the time sheets after just eight minutes but was forced to improve on his best lap still further to defend his first pole of the season. Poggiali and Pablo Nieto took turns in the number one spot, with Nieto taking control with five minutes remaining of the session. Nieto was discarded from the front row however in a final flurry from Poggiali, Sanna and De Angelis, with Vincent leading the trio on the front row after clocking 1´29.097 with less than a minute remaining.

Only 0.8 seconds separate the top eight riders, with Cecchinello (5th), Jenkner (7th) and Pedrosa (8th) joining Nieto (6th) on the second row.
