Alex de Angelis finally steps up among the 125 elite

The Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, held this weekend at the Sachsenring, saw Alex de Angelis take his first podium finish in a round of the 125 World Championship, by crossing the line behind race winner Arnaud Vincent.

The San Marino born rider, who´s competing in his third GP season this year, had been waiting his 42nd Grand Prix appearance to finally enjoy the rostrum celebrations, seven years after he started racing. Alex de Angelis racing debuts were on pocket-bike, before competing in the Italian and European 125 Championships, with the support of the San Marino Motorcycle Federation. After finishing runner-up behind XXX in the Italian Championship in 1999, he raced his maiden 125 Grand Prix on his home track, Imola. At the end of the year, he finished 18th in the overall standings and was named Rookie of the Year. The next year, he was a disappointing 14th, after struggling with technical issues and his own mistakes.

This year, he joined Lucio Cecchinello´s team, who - as a boss and a team mate, seems to be the perfect mentor. Coming to a new team also meant switching from Honda to Aprilia, and that also turned out to be a positive change. Since the start of the season, Alex de Angelis proved to be among the best in terms of sheer speed, but he has been lacking significant results until the German round. After the race, he was absolutely delighted with a well-deserved result : ´I am very happy for this podium ! It´s great and paid back my family´s efforts. The podium is great. I still don´t believe it! I want to thank Lucio as although my scarce last two years he trusted me´.

125cc, 2002, Alex de Angelis
