Matsudo and Sekiguchi look back on the season so far

The riders of the Dark Dog Yamaha Kurz team, Naoki Matsudo and Taro Sekiguchi, had different fortunes this year. Matsudo is one of the most consistent rider of the quarter litre class : he´s one of the three riders (with Nieto and Rolfo) who scored in every Grand Prix raced so far this year. At the Sachsenring, where was held the last Grand Prix before the summer break, the Dark Dog Yamaha Kurz rider had a new engine for his TZM 250, and he hopes it will allow him to make up ground on the front runners. ´Since the Sachsenring, we have a new engine. We didn´t have much time to test it, and during the practice sessions, we´ve been struggling with the set up. We didn´t find the balance. We changed the set up before the race but we didn´t manage to get the most of the bike. I had a great start, I was in third after being tenth, but I couldn´t maintain this position´ explained Matsudo.

Talking about the Championship, the Japanese rider thinks that ´the bike keeps improving´. ´I´m happy, as I manage to do what I was aiming for : scoring points in every Grand Prix. I´m convinced the new engine will allow us to get better results. I hope to keep on scoring and I´ll try to win my first Grand Prix when I have the opportunity to do so. Estoril is one of my favourite circuit ; last year, I finished sixth there, but I´m also upbeat about racing in Motegi´. $$$ Matsudo is now enjoying the break to spend a few days in his home country : ´I have some duties, but after that, I will chill out and have some good time. I look forward going sea fishing !´.

His team mate, Sekiguchi, reigning Champion in the Japanese 250 class, is in his first World Championship season : the greatest challenge of his career. After the Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, where he didn´t score any point, he´s lying in 22nd in the World Championship standings. ´So far, my season hasn´t been as good as expected. Before the start of the season, I was hoping to score in every race and get in the top 15, but it hasn´t been possible´.

He hopes to get better results in the second half of the Championship : ´During this first part of the season, I didn´t know the tracks, I had never raced there. But I already the tracks were will be held the next GP, in Brno, Estoril, Phillip Island and Valence, where I raced last year. I don´t know if this will really allow me to get better results, but I have to make the most of my experience´.

250cc, 2002, Taro Sekiguchi
