Fonsi Nieto snatches pole from Porto

Two electrifying laps provided an exciting finale to the first qualifying session for the 250cc Gauloises Grand Prix Republiky Ceske, with Fonsi Nieto eventually snatching provisional pole in the dying seconds from Sebastián Porto. Nieto held top spot with just two minutes remaining and was trying to improve his time still further when Porto latched on to his tail. The pair crossed the line together just before the chequered flag with the Argentinean setting the fastest lap.

With time for just one more lap Nieto scorched around the Brno track on his Aprilia and beat his Yamaha rival by three tenths of a second, relegating him to second place. Marco Melandri had flirted with top spot throughout the session but was unable to maintain the pace of his two rivals and finished third. Toni Elías completes the front row in fourth place but is a whole second slower than the time set by his Spanish team-mate and compatriot Nieto.

Locatelli heads the provisional second row, holding off Roberto Rolfo by just 0.009 seconds, and is also joined by Randy De Puniet and Franco Battaini in seventh and eighth respectively.
