Hector Barberá makes an early graduation to a 125 frontrunner

Hector Barberá marked his arrival on the world stage last Sunday as he led a 125cc race for the first time in his short career at Brno. The 15 year old rookie, who rides for the team run by Jorge Martínez ´Aspar´, was followed by Steve Jenkner as he made an incredible charge through the field to catch the lead group. Once there, the youngster was not fazed as he battled with more experienced riders than himself, passing Poggiali, Pedrosa, Vincent and Cecchinello to take the lead on lap 15.

Barberá was a last-minute addition to the ´Aspar´ team and, after missing the top fifteen by one place in his first outing at Suzuka, he became the youngest ever rider to pick up Grand Prix points at Jerez (an accolade later claimed by Jorge Lorenzo at Catalunya). The youngster scored further points at Le Mans but failed to repeat the feat in any of the other races leading up to Brno. Barberá was a revelation at the Czech circuit, however, improving his previous best qualifying result from sixteenth to ninth and missing out on a podium finish by just two tenths of a second.
