Melandri hoping to extend winning streak

Marco Melandri heads to Portugal this weekend knowing he has every chance of extending an incredible winning streak which has seen him become the first rider for 17 years to win six successive 250cc Grands Prix. The Italian was a comfortable winner in Brno two weeks ago and he now leads Spaniard Fonsi Nieto by 37 points in the championship as he chases his first ever world title.

The Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal is a huge race for Nieto and could be his last chance to haul back Melandri. The Spaniard had declared that he could afford no mistakes at Brno but crossed the gravel trap when challenging for the lead and finished fourth. Now he faces an uphill struggle to cut down Melandri´s advantage with few other quarter-litre riders looking capable taking points off the series leader.

Roberto Rolfo looked like he might be the man to break Melandri at Brno but he lost control of his Honda to hand podium finishes to Sebas Porto and Toni Elias. Porto has already claimed that his Yamaha could struggle to keep the pace down the famous long straight at Estoril but Elias now seems ready for his debut win in the class, having been the most consistent rider behind Melandri over the last four races.
